This benign entity began existence in these earthly realms as the young planet
formed. Geological tectonic plates moved against one another creating perfect
conditions for jade to form. Subsequent upheavals and glacial erosion cut through
these metamorphic lenses carrying the jade into now known areas of rivers and
moraine formations along the South Island’s West Coast.
The natural polished, 40lb. float jade ‘Voyager’ is sculpted from was recovered from
the Arahura River and came into my care some time later with the comment and
request, “This is a perfect stone for you to carve Donn. Please do something for us.”
Months of pondering over and around this very unique jade resulted with a vision of
the being within. Many more months followed before the final touches revealed
‘Voyager’ to the world.
Observing the impact of this piece on people viewing ‘Voyager’ a decision was
encouraged to produce a limited edition of 25 in bronze.
An intricate silicon mold of the sculpture allows a hollow model to be hand crafted
using special microcrystalline wax.
Employing the ceramic shell, ‘lost wax’ casting technique a bronze is cast from the
wax. A comprehensive set of tools and skills is now required to fettle, polish and
patina the ‘raw’ bronze casting. Days later, after hours of grinding, sanding, polishing
and applying patinas the finished character smiles an enigmatic smile back at you.
25 only will ever be produced…. All will be individual in some way or other…..
different patinas… inlaid eyes … matt and or polished finish….
A 6 week process in all.
